now that i'm all alone again... i guess it's time to start posting on this blog.

In a way it feels kinda weird to be right back where i started.... but also in a way it's not really back to square one... In many ways i think the past 9 months have shaped me more into knowing what i want.... to an even greater extent as compared to formerly.

Still i hope that some sense of normalcy returns.

16 hours of sleep in a row is SO not usual... nonetheless, it felt really good while it lasted (and now i think i'm pretty much dead for all the work that's been pushed back because of those hours hahahahha)

shoutout to my org comm for Wheels for Meals (SMUX biking round-island ride), thanks for all the hard work put in so far! we're about 1/2 way there so keep your spirits up and hope you guys continue to persevere even with all the projects and stuff due.

work keeps piling up but i think i'm enjoying it (emphasis on I THINK). Basically in school from 8am every morning to about 11 pm every night. Only thing i'm getting out of all this is a rounder tummy and a flatter butt (from all the chair parade that i'm doing).

This is an answer to medaline's question, which is on the shoutbox. For the benefit of those who don't go there, I shall post it on here (since its quite long).

it goes like this:
btw i am really amazed. Do students in SMU have 48 hours a day or 12 hours a day? It seems that what they do per day needs 48 hours. But they are always short of time. so they look like they only have 12 hours a day. enlighten me please.

Well my answer is this:
SMU has developed a revolutionary new invention that enables students to compress time and to minimize tasks so that its students use less time to complete them as compared to others who do not have this invention.

The result is that SMU students are able to complete tasks that will take normal men and women 48 hours in less than 24 hours. Thus, we are able to do 48 hours worth of tasks within 24 hours.

As with all inventions, there are always flaws / exceptions. Perhaps the specimen SMU student that you have been observing is one who's one of the flaws / exceptions. Generally speaking, using this invention developed by SMU will make you seem to have only 4 hours per day, not the stated 12.

I don't see the point in going to some far-off camp just for some civil servant to give us a talk when an email containing a well-worded document would have sufficed.

then again, i doubt many people do read their emails especially to that detail so oh well.

Project Oracle:
Yay finally got to meet everyone... I must say it's going to be a very interesting experience come December. Hope that everyone feels the same way too.

Really looking forward to the adventure... and definitely the work's going to be tough but i'm pretty sure everything will be fine =)

School:
Just completed one presentation, and that went pretty well i suspect. So i'm pretty happy hehe... now on to a very important report. hmmmm technology and world change....

But having said that i guess today's one of the least stressful periods of my uni life. It's been quite a few weeks of stress with smuggers abounding.

the past week has been spent experimenting with different prata houses... and it's taken a toll on my body haha.... flabbier now than ever but i don't care. i'm enjoying each and every bite of it hahahhaha

Moving out soon.... i'm so gonna miss this big room of mine.. especially when we move to the small rooms over there =(

OOOoohhhh! FTB run 4 was awesome! =) hehe.... had such a great time with my group ZUMO (which stands for Zest U MOre). i think it's a really really cool name man...we were in the SPARTANS section (which incidently won best section for the 3rd consecutive run!)

All thanks to the ORg Comm and faci's who put in all the effort to make FTB such a rousing success for participants. personally, i've learnt so much from this camp.

okie... i've FINALLY collated the pics from Kinabalu, and yes this is the eagerly-awaited (yeah right) post with the pics. so here goes:

DAY 1:
took the causeway link bus from Kranji MRT to City Lounge (or so we thought). The bus didn't stop at city lounge. took us straight to Langkit (or Lakin? can't remember)

These two were taken from my window seat of AirAsia. I must say the flight was unremarkable except for two things. Firstly, the air-conditioning was pretty bad, and next, the pilots have the uncanny ability to land pretty badly all the time.

Our accomodation was The Beach Lodge. there are 4 floors on the building. so imagine walking up the stairs on the second floor and seeing the sign on the left, only to walk to the third floor to see the sign on the right. talk about bad signage.

our room was pretty decent though. air conditioning, beds, blankets and clean floors. only complaint would be the horrendous amounts of ants and the one cockroach that just wouldn't die. looks like this:

Alrighty. After settling down on day 1, we slept for the night.

Day 2:

We went to the beach! wooot! i believe it was Sapi Island. About 15 - 20 mins power-boat ride from the pier. and boy was it just beautiful! =)

Snorkeling was pretty interesting there... many fish in the sea though the corals were pretty damaged from many many many tourist visitors.

that's a school of fish in the water... it's the dark mass in the middle of the pic.

so after a whole day of frolicking in the sun, we headed back to the mainland for seafood dinner! =)

Day 3 - 4:

Reveille: 0700

Depart Beach Lodge: 0830

Arrival @ Park Gate: 1130

Start Climb: 1145

Reach Laban Rata: 1630

Sleep: 1800 - 0200

Start Summit climb: 0230

Reach Summit: 0530

After this... i run out of battery for camera. hehe.. but we DID go rafting on day 5, and here's a shoutout to Alex Reed! the doc from the UK whom we met while rafting... far out guy =)

Day 6... went to another offshore island.... manukan i believe it was... and headed back just in time to catch the flight home.

the curious case of the boss with no brains.

i have a superior called... okay lets call him D. D's being a major pain in the butt.

imagine you taking a short 10 min break after finishing reviewing, entering and checking 4000 entries on an excel spreadsheet. only to have a mad cow interrogating you about your work less than 5 mins into your break.

so here's how it all went down:
D: do you have any work to do?
L: err yes... i've finished it
D: really... so you've NOTHING to do now is it?
L: i've already told A that i'm done. i'm waiting for him to finish his stuff
D: oh really? so what did A tell you to do?

and i had to explain the jobscope... and show him the spreadsheet... and seriously... who the hell does he think he is?

L: so i've finished it.
D: okay. make sure you constantly remind A that you've completed the work.

i mean HELLO!!! i just finished it (and finished it in such good time that A actually was shocked that i was done) and you're complaining.

ok actually not really, but since it's been a while since i've bought anything for myself, (except for DVDs, VCDs and Music CDs) it might as well have been one! got myself a pair of shades and a digi-cam!! =) -jumps about-

had a mortifying experience yesterday... saw 3 transvestites walking around vivocity... totally grossed me out man... had the hair and face and clothes all done pretty tastefully but man it's still super revolting -shudders-

i'm getting sooo broke... kinda hard to pay for stuff nowadays... cos everything suddenly seems so ex when you're running out of cash? heh... money management.. mmmm...

pan's was pretty neat... just kinda dark and scary? heh... in a sense i guess... lotsa themes brought forward by the director / writer... pretty interesting... though the ending was a lil too drawn out for my liking... but nice art-house flick. everybody dies!

shuqi: i'm glad we managed to squeeze in some time for each other this trip back... heh... the emails will be sent soon no worries =)

9 more weeks to go... doubt it's gonna get any easier...

sometimes it hard to fathom why days just seem to get more dreary when you're counting down to something... and the moment the countdown's over, you miss the dreary days.

i miss studying... i can't stand being in the military. yet it's hard now to picture myself studying now that i've been through the military. incredulous i know, but it's just not the same. (i think).

anyways, this week's been pretty bad... the upcoming week seems like it's gonna be worse. with training getting harder instead of lighter it seems as though i'm just going to break down one of these days.

well anyways, to all who're still busy with exams: push on! you'll enjoy the rest soon enough.

for those who're done already: break out the party gear... it's time to celebrate! =)

well besides the obvious happiness, I'm pretty tired all day... haven't been blogging too often as it's been hard to even stay a few hours at home at a time... so yeah... pretty fleeting moments at home lead to pretty low blog content.

looking back at all the months of training for NDP, the DAY has finally arrived and I'll be meeting it with a mixture of trepidition and excitement. Hope that all turns out well, especially to show the public all the hard work we've been putting in.

Been good to catch up with old friends and making new ones as well... heh... been really really fun talking and chatting etc..

NE Show...

Primary 5 kids can scream. They're LOUD. So loud they drown out my commander's voice on parade.

For the first time in my life, I've been made to feel like an animal at the zoo. the Special Functions group was having a photo shoot at the East entrance, and all of a sudden, a whole buncha civilians wanted to have a picture taken with us.. (!) or just take a picture of the lance guard group.

garhh... Next time I go to a zoo, I promise I will NOT stare and TAKE PICTURES with any of the animals. -nods- It's not a good feeling!

Anyway, I'm quite happy with the way the Lance Guard performed for the parade itself. It's been a few long months of hard training and I'm glad it's all paying off now.

PAINTBALL!!!

muahaha.... paintball owns! so much fun... so much laughter... so much pain and agonY!!! garhhhh but it's a really great way to have fun with friends =) highly recommeded for people with lots of friends hee =)

very safe too! very detailed safety briefings and alert marshalls ensure an enjoyable game for all. though i've learnt my lesson not to stand in the path of the projectiles when they're fired... it can hurt quite a lot lol. thanks to Jianping for arranging the session!

Dinner was @ Brazillian! and totally rawked hehe... meat fest and quite a decent salad bar too! Hope that I'd be able to go back one more time sometime soon hehe...

Went back to SAJC today and my oh my does the new campus look just fine! (a lil belated visit i suppose but haven't been able to squeeze time to visit the new place).

Only complaint from the visit today would be the lack of warmth in the school, probably because of the wider hallways, larger canteen and the oppenness of the design... it's very bright compared to the old campus where everything was shady and had a more rustic and olden feeling of homeliness.

Food's still as good as ever!

hehe... especially to my platoon: you guys have spirit and i hope you guys will continue to be full of energy and zeal to perform whatever tasks are given to you.

it's been quite a nice week, albeit with a lack of sleep. ran into quite a few people in camp, people i haven't met in a while, like Bernard Koh from AFUA, and Boon Hui, or should I say 2LT Chan. was really nice seeing you in a camp with hardly a familiar face.

as for the previous post, i'm glad that period's now over, and i'm looking forward to what's next in store for me in the coming days.

NDP rehearsals tomorrow. hopefully the food is good... and i'm kinda looking forward to it =). gonna be a blast i'd expect =)

India!

1) Travelling in:
Well we took off from Changi Airport Terminal 1 @ 0915, Flight Number: S2 082. Destination: Delhi International Airport.

Was really, really emotional at the airport. Don't know, but I really don't like the idea of flying off alone... never done that before. But what can I do yeah?

Mother looked as though she was going to cry... Thank goodness she didn't. Perhaps I would have joined her had she broken down? I guess so...

On the flight, we were served with breakfast. It was, admittedly, very good! =) Bun and Jam, fruits, sausage, brocolli and spinach quiche. Sad to say, but I wish I could say the same of the in-flight entertainment. All they had were MTVs, bad movies and radio channels that weren't in English. Reading helps in such circumstances (Thank You Kinokuniya).

Arrived @ 1230 local time in Delhi.

2) On The Road:
The bus trip out of the airport to the base camp was an eye-opener to say the least. The rich-poor divide is laid bare in front of your window and it is pretty much IN YOUR FACE. Mud houses with barely clothed children exist side by side with private estates with air-conditioning. Kids in the street picking up food from the grounds outside posh restaurants. Heart-rending scene...

Lunch and Dinner en route to base were inside restaurants. They were buffet-style Indian cousine and pretty good (up to that point).

3) Training:
a) Weather -
- Cool/Cold Nights initially: 15 - 20 degrees
- 25 degrees at latter end of trip
- Day Temp: 42 - 47 degrees
- Low humidity: Lip Gloss a MUST
- very windy conditions lead to dust storms
- Dehydration a constant problem (due to heat and humidity)
- Cloudless sky gives you a clear view of the stars at night (His wonderful Creation)

b) Scenery / Terrain
- Very similar to the Australian Wild Bush
- Semi-arid vegetation
- Shrubs and small trees
- Boulder Fields
- No buildings for miles and miles
- Occassional Kampungs
- Loose topsoil with hard rock beneath (not soft enough to sleep on)
- Undulating open land with occasional ridges and knolls
- Overhanging power cables
- NO tall buildings -> Great sunsets and sunrises

c) Accomodation
- New camp -> working/good condition facilities
- Beds, cupboards, fans, cooling system, toilets, power plugs, showers
- Basketball court, medical centre, badminton court, canteen, cookhouse, laundry service, toilet cleaners

4) Rest & Recreation:
Finally on the bus home. I'm glad I've managed to survive thus far.

The feeling of euphoria and joy amongst the guys approaches the level of pandemonium. I must admit, though, that while I do share the same feelings, I will probably miss the time spent in camp. Through all the training, enduring both heat and cold, as well as the lousy food once in a while, this phase in India has changed me in many ways. I know I'm stronger and much more matured from the experience.

a) Taj Mahal
What a magnificent structure! What architecture and what an amazing story behind it. A structure of love. Too bad I can't put any pictures here... what a waste.

5) Flying Home:
Turbulent. God's will be done. Not feeling well either. Haven't been eating/feeling comfortable the whole day. Just can't wait to get home. Many of the guys are down with weird infirmities too. I hope everything turns out ok.

I miss home food. Even the tea-O sounds good now. Dinner on board wasn't up to standard. At least not up to the standard of the food on the flight in. The service was just as good as the outbound flight though.

the past 3 days have been filled with much activity for me. I'm glad I've managed to meet up with so many and to enjoy so much the past 3 days.

Family day... had a great time at the driving range and pool hall. Jap dinner was fantastic as well.

Reflections:
12 hours to take off time, and already I'm missing home. Getting seriously emotional for all the wrong reasons. Guess I can't really help it.

Guess this marks another milestone in my life... flying off without my parents to some foreign land. Maybe I'm too much of a family boy. I don't know. I'm proud of it though... I know they'll be there for me no matter what happens.

I'm leaving on a jetplane... don't know when i'll be back again. Ooh babe, I hate to go.

hell weeks' over!

and it wasn't so hell either... but it's been pretty bad in another sense...

why not so hell:
had lots of fun doing all the drills and driving the vehicle. really feels good to have such a heavy vehicle respond like a normal car. also, I finally realise what a great combination our military utilises in the unit.

Another reason was because i also realised how fortunate i am to be in armour. a buncha infantrymen from another unit were doing foot navigation exercise and were just staring in awe that we had transport. guess i'm kinda fortunate.

why it's hell:
i tore my knee ligaments. excused from training for 1 month, but i still have to go out field with everyone else and do almost everything that they do. oh well, i guess that's the military.

Can't wait to pass out though... it's already been 12 weeks and with 6 more to go, it's kind hard not to feel impatient.

what a wonderful wonderful song... the lyrics beautiful, and the feelings and emotions really come through through.

heh... perhaps that's just how sometimes you feel when you know a part of you has gone and probably won't ever come back. especially when that someone is particularly dear.

I guess what's important is to find closure and move on with life... for time to moan and groan and weep is like a vapour, which will be around only for a season, and just as quickly as it appeared, vanishes away.

when you've put in so much into something, and it all vanishes like a vapour, until there's only just a whiff of what has been, and all you can do is just get smell of what it is before it disappears.

i wish i could go back to happier times, where life was more care-free and when individuals meant so much more.

But as with all aspects in this pilgrimage we euphemistically call life, they will pass soon enough, and we will meet new vapours to tingle our senses with. I guess the importance is in being able to move from one vapour to another seamlessly.

how much is the digital age denying us the ability to express ourselves properly in face-to-face situations? I don't know, but i do know that i do not like what it is doing to my life.

Nights out!!! wooot... hehex

finally got 4 hour pass to go out of camp... so spending it at macs in jurong point. not much point going home really, since i'd have to go right back to camp immediately.

anyways, i've gotten myself injured on monday during my SOC training. got a really long cut along my back... so it's hurting quite a bit and it's not helping that i can't sleep, therefore can't recover properly.

besides that trying to have a fab time so i guess i'd better get partying soon before i have to book back in! hehx... take care people

OKayz... this year's been really boring for me. I dunno, didn't really feel occupied during CNY this year. I guess it's because it's all happening on the weekend, therefore not much mood to celebrate? (since it coincides with the weekly rest from army period).

Not so sure if many people felt the same way.. perhaps I'm getting too old for celebrating anything anymore? hehx... I'll think about that one larh.

Chu Xi:
Reunion dinner @ home!!! =) so fun! hehx... steamboat + lotsa food. and it was all wonderful! compliments to the chef (cheers!).

After dinner, went out with my two cousins for a walk @ the airport... couldn't walk straight for a while cos i was tired etc... but i made it home in one piece!!! (thank goodness my jie can drive pretty well -nods-).

Chu Yi:
Went to church in the morning, then went to bai nian at a lot of my relative's homes. I guess one great thing about CNY is the catching up with your kins over snacks and refreshments hehx.

Chu er:
went out (again) visiting... then went out to watch xiao hai bu ben 2 (i not stoopid too). the movie's excellent! =) go catch it with ur family... made me cry a coupla times hehx... guess it struck a chord with me.

Chu san:
BOOK IN DAY!!!! muahhahahaha... so sickenning.... how long more will this go on.........

this has been sucha sucky day... i wonder why things always happen to spoil my happy moments. i'm in pain, and the world's not helping...

i made 3 wishes yesterday... they all came apart within 24 hours... perhaps it's just life telling me to grow up... esp since i'm 20 today. the big TWO-zero. garhh... no longer a teen.

growing up's not a happy thing. it's one year closer to the deathbed. hehx dunno why i'm so morbid today. anyways, hope things get better... i'm sure they will.

End of week 5.

i'm so dead. my friend and i broke the lecture room key (and it's still stuck in the keyhole). so ermm... i guess it'll be extra duty soon! (tremors)

other than that, 2 weeks of LSM (course i/c) duty over. it's been hell, and it's been fun. thank you lots to all who've supported me through these 2 weeks.

it's been an emotional course so far... hopefully they do not overwhelm me. no matter, i know i'll live through it. just hoping for alil more emotional support hehe.

got my licence! haha i'm now a qualified driver of an armoured vehicle. =) feels good man... really feels good.

started training on new weapons systems this week too! haha it's been great fun...

oh today we just had our 5km run @ east coast. really good to see the whole training institute doing something together for a change. really builds bonds hehe...

anyways, tis the season to be jolly... hope everyone's got someone close and cuddly to spend this festive season with! =) enjoy the times you share together, be it your friends, loved ones or even if its yourself! =)

week 2 of AI training ended.

haha this week was fun! really enjoyed driving the 'A' vehicles! haha it feels so good to be able to drive such a huge vehicle over the various obstacles presented to us.

BUT!!!!!

cleaning and maintaining the vehicle wasn't so fun. but at least i know how to service it properly haha... shouldn't have problems in future with my own car =)

alrighty... one more thing: who's free this coming christmas?! gimme a ring if u wanna meet up! =)

anyways, now there is. i'm a corporal now, posted to sungei gedong camp to be an armour trooper. so a lil apprehensive about it all... can't wait for passing out day from the army... i just hope that training will be fun for the rest of my term.

END OF CONFINEMENT WEEK! haha.. here're the highlights

I was chosen by the company to fire the matador HEAT weapon at the live range. Since the firers were chosen by their performance in the technical handling test, being selected was a great boost and I guess it helped me push myself harder during training.

The experience of firing a rocket from your shoulder is one that's hard to match. From the moment you step into the firing chamber, your pulse rate starts increasing and the sense of anticipation and excitement gets you all jittery.

Since the rockets cost quite a lot of money each, we all made sure we took careful aim before firing off. Upon squeezing the trigger, the sound generated is extraordinary. Since we're firing in an enclosed space, all sound is reflected back to your ear before exiting through the firing window. As a result, you are stunned and deafened by the blast of the weapon.

Also, the amount of smoke generated is enough to choke and blur your vision for the next few minutes. It is also enough to turn your uniform from green to grey in an instant. The result was a really disorientated me trying to find an exit to the firing chamber.

But I'm glad I got the chance to fire the weapon. Given another chance, I'd do it again! =)

Something happened that made me realise how fragile superficial relationships can be, as well as how some people react to pressure when pushed to their limits.

During the day, we had section training out field. Weather was hot and dry, with very little overhead canopy to shelter us from the sun.

One of my section mates fell out due to an asthmatic reaction, while another fell out due to breathlessness during the training. However, although both have medical history for their respective conditions, I get the feeling that they were making use of their conditions to their advantage in order to escape training.

Another trainee from another section fell out with the commanders in charge of her, perhaps due to the stress or the weather. That trainee desperately wanted to fall out of training because he/she couldn't take the stress that the commanders were placing on her.

In a sense, I guess I can understand that not everyone handles stress the same way, and not everyone can take too much pressure. Perhaps I'm just putting my own standards on others.

Later that evening, we were punished on our way back to camp due to our sloppy movement. Some in the platoon were quite unhappy with the treatment and, understandbly, got quite heated up. One of them was one of the armskote assistants who was working with me to send arms.

We got into a little misunderstanding and he challenged me physically, grabbed my shirt and demanded a fight. I backed off.

In the end, I'm glad no malice came out of hte incident. Good sense broke out and the sergeant in charge of the armskote separated the both of us. I'm certain that if there were a fight, we'd both live to regret it.

26 Oct, Wed

Guard duty: horrendous. We have 2 hours to walk around a certain area twice. But since the area is so small, it is possible to walk around it 8 times. Serious misallocation of resources.

27 Oct, Thurs

Exercise: Wanderer.

One of the best days of the course. Being able to find all the checkpoints given to us was a great feeling, especially since the previous two navigation exercises were failures in the sense that we didn't manage to find anything, or found very few.

Two Checkpoints were really challenging and I'm glad we found it all. One was right in the middle of a swamp, and it took quite a lot of determination to find it. The other had a very vague description and we combed a large area before being able to find out outside the stated parameters.

The weather was great for the most part, until about 3/4 way through the day when it started to rain cats and dogs.

I've come to appreciate transport a lot more. Be it public or private, having wheels beneath your feet certainly is a great comfort and advantage.

i'm in charlie company in sispec. quite a hell hole. i now treasure everything that's air force blue. i miss the fep days...

moving on, being back on the mainland feels good. though it's only for a night, i know i'll treasure every second of it. i can't believe how much i miss my home and parents. mom, dad i love you both.

going back tomorrow, it already seems so fast. i hope to be back to update my blog soon.

i guess being left alone at home has taught me a lot. like how life will be a few years down the road. when my parents pass on (not being bad but i mean everyone has to go someday yeah?) i think i know how it'll feel being @ home... with nothing but books and movies and music to entertain... miserable...

this week has made me feel how vulnerable i am... how alone in this world i am... and how much my parents mean to me. i hope they read this (though i refuse to give them the blog address)...

nt very inspired today, so forgive the ranting... SISpec starts on monday... better start packing.
